My Philosophies on Breakin-
Use Poppin, Lockin, House, or anything not even related to dance to build your own personal bboy style.
Dance with the style, not within it.
The true bboy uses his skill as a liberation of oneself. Not as a dance.
Breakin’s first concern should be about the experience and not its movements of expression.
The true Bboy cannot be structured or confined.
To be bound by traditional bboy style is the way of the mindless, enslaved bboy, but to be inspired by the traditional bboy style and to achieve further heights is the way of genius.
In reality, breakin is not a dance style. It is being. It is an experience. A way of life.
When your feeling is more involved with your dance your dance improves. This can be applied with anything in life.
Original moves are greater than traditional moves. Innovate!
Breakin cannot be judged. Because it is an artform, it can only be critiqued.
It is purely impossible for a bboy to be truly “complete”. For one would have to learn everything and learning is boundless.
When there is no thought derived from memory, experience, or knowledge of that style… There is no thinker at all. Because, those are of the past. Use those tools for the present to innovate the dance for the future. Create!
Build immediately an atmosphere of freedom so that you can dance and find out for yourselves what is true, so that you are able to dance with the ability to understand the music, not just conform to it.
Dance is the space between music and the human body.
The point is to utilize breakin as a means to advance the study of life.
Dance is our relationship to music. The greater you are as a dancer, the greater the relationship.
Breakin will destroy any dance style in battle. For "the battle" is the birthplace of our dance style.
My stance on Hiphop Choreography-
There exists, in the dance world, studios that are mechanical, choreographed, “No-Soul”. The real Hiphop dancers feel that such systems/studios are “frames” that can kill the life of freedom of expression by their too rigid limitation. We feel that such practices are merely “doing” and not “being”. Instead of promoting inward experience, the routines and dances are imitative repetition, a mere product. Futhermore, these studios feel that an idealogy is a mere projection of hope. If one loves, one need not to have an ideology of love.
What we are after in breakin is the dance, not the steps. The dance is the real knowledge. Steps are surface knowledge. Dance breeds personal expression. Steps breeds mechanical conditioning, imposes limitations, and haults creativity.
I feel if you want to become a great drawer(artist), you must learn the basic fundamentals of drawing. You must first be taught to hold a pencil correctly, different lines, shading, etc. You must learn the basic understanding of dimension and how it relates to your drawing. Once these skills are possessed you can then learn how to apply them to your own creative expression. Thus, making your soul part of your art. What these Hiphop studios(per se) teach is the artform of tracing. Thus when the student is told to draw without tracing they have no understanding. Therefore, they have no understanding of self and how to relate it to dance. Because, all they have been taught is choreography not the dance or the art of expressing the human body to music.
Choreograph, steps, and moves prevent bboy understanding. Let your body and the music move together in understanding, with feeling, then there is a possibility of real communion with each other.
In battle, a choreographed dancer can never bring fluidity. This type of dancer is unable to respond to the ever-changing moment in battle.
My Battle Principles and Strategies-
In battling you must never be half-hearted. Your main concern is with the correct and most determined execution of your dance. Every movement you make should be penetrating!
It is easy to learn the mechanics of a move. But, to apply that move in battle with the music and at the correct time is what is the most important.
Your strongest burns towards your opponent should be executed first and last. Thus, making both your entry and exit into the cypher memorable. This creates an illusion for the strength of your round.
Burns must be regulated very carefully to fit in with the rhythm of the music. This skill is what separates the non-rhythmic move compared to one that is complimented by rhythym. Keep in mind, breakin is not movements; but more so movements to the rhythm of music. Thus, making it a dance. Therefore, your burns should also be dancing!
If one has the opportunity to study their opponent before battle, do so. Know thy enemy and the weapons they possess before entering into combat. This serves as a great advantage.
Train hard before a battle. Change your weapons(moves). This will effectively hinder your opponent’s mind state if he/she studies you before hand.
The stronger battler will be he/she who, if necessary, is able to change his/her moves and rhythm to the environment. Music, surface, opponent, etc. Giving the ability to adapt.
Watch for your opponent’s styles, habits, and movements and use them for your advantage.
Courage and decision are essential factors to success in battling.
In comparisons of skill, the stronger one will certainly beat the weaker one. However, if the weaker one battles with all his efforts and finally loses, his courage can win admiration from the stronger. Thus, one of the most important factors in battling is gained, respect.
Music itself is the greatest weapon a bboy takes into battle. Knowing that weapon personally will soley strengthen it’s power.
During battle, the use of music as your weapon is sufficient. But, to use the elements of music is even greater. –Words, Pauses, Polyrhythm, Etc.
The Science of Dance-
Human body movement is the most related to human emotion and dancing is the most basic way to represent emotional images. Furthermore, if we analyze body movement in dancing, we can expect to be able to extract human emotion more directly than by using drawings, musical pieces, etc.
Dance is the process of mapping emotion to motion.
Dance is an expression of life and transcends both time and space. Behind every motion is the music made visible.
Can Art Create Art?
Yes and this is the proof:
A musician’s body plays an instrument that creates music. The music plays the instrument called the body which creates dancing. Everything is one!
