So....ANYONE can throw a dope jam. This is my effort to give back to the culture that i love. This is what i think you need to know to throw a basic bboy jam.
Judges:
- panel of 3
- preferably each judge represents a different area/state/region
- judges should have some kind of credibility as it relates to the competition
- depending on how far away they live from the venue, they may ask you to supply them w/ a place to stay for the night and gas $$ in addition to the fee that they ask, but that really depends on the individual judge
DJ:
- quality over quantity (wack dj's will ask you to pay them a crap ton of money because they are well known. that does NOT mean they are good.)
- wide variety of musical knowledge preferred (ability to rock any style of breakbeat)
- make sure you talk to the dj about equipment. will they bring their own? who's supplying the speakers? are the tables/mixers compatible w/ the speakers?
- try and get 2 djs for the jam. Not only does it give the jam a more diverse sound, but djs get tired too! 2 djs means they get to rest up a bit.
Venue:
- non-smoking environment
- floor must be good (smooth stone, wood, etc.)
- large enough to hold everyone but small enough to keep the vibe strong
- low in cost (talk to some a Boys and Girls Club, or some place like that)
- available for the hours you want (most jams go from around 6 or 7 till midnight or 1am...ish)
- HAVE A BACKUP VENUE JUST IN CASE
Amission:
- depends on the prize and the format of the jam. Bigger prize means bigger admission. We're all broke dancers looking to have a good time. most small jams run around $5. $10 w/ camera.
Cost of the whole shebang....roughly around $1200. Plan to spend around $1500. Keep in mind that at $10 a person you need 150 to show up to break even. I usually lose about $100-$200 when i throw jams, but that's cause i don't try and get funding. Too...much...hassle...
The good thing about YOU paying is that you have complete control and say over what goes on. If you get funding they may want to get their hands in your event in all kinds of ways and basically try to make it into what THEY want it to be. Usually makes the jam LESS DOPE, but S'really up to you.
Hit me back if you have any questions. This is how i throw my jams. (100% down to get feedback) Even if you lose out on a few $$ the dancers will respect you for giving back to your scene.
If you and your crew throw a jam and everyone pitches in the $$, then it's cheap for everybody and everyone in your scene has a good time!
